Evergreen Q&A

Q. What is Evergreen?

A. Evergreen is a voluntary renewable energy, or green energy, program available to your home, farm or business through your local electric cooperative (Dairyland Power system). Evergreen is for those who want to do more to support renewable energy.

Q. Where does Evergreen renewable energy come from?

A. Evergreen renewable energy comes from solar and wind generation resources. We strive to select renewable energy sources that are reliable, affordably priced and regionally located.

Q. Aren’t you required to produce a certain amount of electricity from renewable energy resources?

A. Some states require that a specific percentage of a utility’s energy sales come from renewable energy sources. We are meeting those directives. Evergreen energy is separate from and in addition to those requirements.

Q. How does Evergreen work?

A. It’s simple. In addition to your normal, monthly electric bill, you volunteer to pay a small, additional charge each month to offset the additional cost it takes to support renewable energy generation. There is nothing to hook up. And, you will continue to receive the same reliable electric service. You can support renewable energy without having to own your own solar panels or wind turbine.

Q. What are the benefits of participating in the Evergreen renewable energy program?

A. By participating in Evergreen you are investing in the future of the environment. As our dependence on renewable energy sources increases we become less dependent on more conventional power plants that burn fossil fuels such as coal and natural gas.

Q. How much does Evergreen cost?

A. Evergreen is affordable. In addition to your regular electric bill, you volunteer to pay only $1 more for a block of 100 kilowatt hours (1 cent per kWh) each month. A block of 100 kWh represents about 10% of the average residential monthly electric use (1,000 kWh). Buy more blocks and do even more to support renewable energy.

Q. What do you do with the proceeds from the Evergreen program?

A. Proceeds cover the costs required to provide energy from additional renewable energy sources and to administer a green power program. Renewable energy from specific regional solar and wind generation facilities is procured to meet Evergreen  purchases. The renewable energy credits, the green or environmental attributes associated with the energy generated, are retired on behalf of the purchaser.

Q. How do I know that I am getting my electricity from renewable energy sources?

A. All power generation facilities that generate electricity, from renewable or conventional sources, are connected to the power grid. All generated power flows into this pool. Electricity flows from the pool to serve homes, farms and businesses. So, the actual electricity that serves your home or business may or may not come from renewable sources. However, the renewable energy that you purchase will increase the amount of renewable energy flowing into the pool and reduce our dependence on electricity generated from non-renewable sources such as coal and natural gas.

Q. How can I be a part of the Evergreen program?

A. You can participate in Evergreen by contacting your local electric cooperative a member of the Dairyland Power system.
